southcoast 22 keel problem

I have just purchased a 1974 Southcoast 22 and the swing keel does not drop all the way and something seems to be stopping it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

I suspect that your swing keel weighs 500 Lbs. which should drop easily.
What often happens with swing keel/center board boats is that marine growth jams up the slot or trunk where the swing keel lives. You are going to have to get into the slot with a flat metal tool and try to knock as much growth out of there as you can. I do this every year for the center board slot on my Tartan 27'. I get piles of barnacle shells falling out when I do this.
A reasonable tool for this job is a flat metal bar or a small wood or sheet rock saw.

Thanks . It was a fresh water boat. Does the keel have a locking pin? I have read somewhere that the Southcoast has one but I see none. Thanks for the help.

Been working on my southcoast keel for about six months now off and on while the boat sits up on bocks at a friends house. My keel came free of the trunk pretty easily but then I found the solid resin skin had been comprimised to the point of about 70% delamination from the now rusting cast iron. I expect you freed yours by now, there is a lot of room in the trunk so just be 100% sure of your cable or blocks so it does not fall unexpectedly. Then you will need to chip off any loose resins to bare metal and sandblask and prime to seal out new rust before starting to put things right. I installed a set of new bronze eyelets for the main bolt hole and the lift cable hole and glassed/resined them in place after a snug fit into a drilled out hole. This will keep the pin and cable bracket from digging back into the resin and exposing the iron to water again anytme soon and after this job you will want to forget about the keel for a few years. I used a new 316 stainles keel bolt with SS retaining clamps and installed a PVC skid plate onto the leading bottom edge of the keel after final fiberglass applications to protect the fiberglass edge from running aground and exposing the iron. Simply cut a piece of pvc pipe in half and fiberglassed about 12" of one half onto the lower leading edge. If you are already where I am, let me know if you had to strip the keel resin. I need to know what a good fairing job looks like for this particular keel but have not found anything yet to look at that is in good shape to see what shape that might be. I expect I have some work still to do in that area.

OH, they do have a locking pin but it should be visible as an extra bolt just aft of the keel pin location. I believe there may also be a "up" position lock hole for the bolt forward of the main bolt but my boat doeas not have either anymore. I suspect for a boat this size they become a pain to remember to reposition each time the keel is adjusted and would not allow for locking in the keel at intermittent positions. also likely allowed water to spalsh in some possibly.
