Window AC Unit
I know it's kind of redneck but we don't have AC on our Newport 27 and we thought about adding a window unit to blow into the forward hatch. Kansas summers are H.O.T and humid enough that after awhile you can wash your socks in the sweat that runs off!

It would only be while at the slip and I suspect would sit on the deck with some side sheets so the air would be deflected off the hatch cover and into the v-berth.

Like I said, sounds red-neck but it would allow us to enjoy time at the slip.

Anyone tried this and if so, got any pics, fellow rednecks?

Kind regards

Re: Window AC Unit
It is redneck, but instead of trying fit it to your forward hatch just drop it in the companion way. Its not ideal having to climb over it but certainly makes like in the slip a lot more tolorable for about a $100 and a piece of wood to hold it in the groove.

Goes in the dock box or locker when not in use. Considering we really only "need" A/C here on the Chesapeake for about 4-8 weeks, I can live with the redneck A/C version for now. A small one will cool your boat down nicely I would think. Mine does a decent job, about 20 degrees different e from the outside temps, but of course the lower humidity is what you really notice :)

BTW, if you are bow in the slip, nobody really sees it ;)

Re: Window AC Unit
Thanks Shawn. We considered the companionway version and it still might be doable. Summer's a bit longer here but we'd only have it in place when actually at the slip. Would be stowed while not on site.

Would be easier to fit, true, and may be workable even climbing over it. Lots better than sweltering, that's for sure!

Appreciate the comments.

Re: Window AC Unit
You'd be better off getting a small portable room air conditioner rather than a window shaker. Then all you need to do is put the hot air exhaust duct out the hatch. With a window shaker it is going to leak water all over the place.

Re: Window AC Unit
Not red neck at all. We use a window style unit mounted sidewise, blowing air into the cabin via the butterfly hatch. The water (condensate) outlet is at the back of the unit and has a drain plug which we attach to a hose and then run the hose over board. Hot and sticky in the wet season in Thailand, so when in the marina we are the coolest red necks around, seems like most other folks who are here for a bit do this as well, some on the forward hatch and others in the companionway.!

I wonder how the unit above (post 4) gets rid of it's water?

here is my redneck style--funny, with a formosa, one ned only knck out one formosa window, have a frame made and ta daaa....heavenly dry tropical air for pleasant sleeping and repairing of boat in the humid area known as tropics.....loving life.

the 47 vagabond near me just bought a nice lg 8000 btu window unit forhis aft cabin overhead hatch. they will sleep well now. strange how a mickelson built vagabond 47 doesnt look so redneck with one of

i chose this pver the stand alone type as it is more efficient. it is also more efficient than marine air conditioners.

I have one similar to the one in post 4. Keeps my 27 like a meat locker. Had it going on 4 years now. Exhausts out the companionway and a hose off the back drains into the bilge. We are in Central Florida, land of heat and humidity.

lol for me--aint no naybors--is summer in furycameville and no ones insurance will let them stay here--i am golden, as this marina now has 3 living aboard occupants, and is only less than 1/3 occupancy total.

as i said, the mickelson built vaqabond 47 just got one they installed into an overhead hatch.....they saw i was sleeping at night, so they actually joined me in rednekville, as we protest the using of air conditioning--we neither one were ever gonna use air conditioning..rodlmaol

our marina, currently----

by the way--this is a wyndham grande hotel marina....rodlmao...

Re: Window AC Unit
Fairly common fix. See CLICKY.

If you make a dacron shroud with a weighted edge it makes storing the the thing easier.

Neatest installation is the washboard one. PITA climbing over it though!
