Adhesive for Rub Rail

Just had the boat painted and now need to replace the hollow, stainless steel rub rail. Questions: Should adhesive be applied to just the screws or the entire underside of the rail or just a small bead along the edges? What is the best sealant to use? Any preparations to the newly painted (Awlgrip) surface prior to attaching? How best to clean off any excess? Any advise would be most helpful and appreciated.

Adhesive to the screws is adequate. The screws should be close enough together to provide a tight fit. The adhesive acts as a sealant where the screws penetrate the hull.
