Bunch of questions replacing wood up top.

First heres a pic of my new cockpit locker doors.

My step father made them. One problem is that he used Fir and not mahogany or teak because of cost. I would gladly have paid for teak (I think). Anyway, I thought they looked great and way better than redoing my teak would look. So hit me up with your thoughts on using fir. We will be varnishing it. My step father spent 7 or 8 years sailing the east and west coast of northern south america, but he also kicked over a winch handle and, while undoing my wood he lost the spin halyard up the mast. . He claimes as long as I keep it coated it will be fine. I am guessing I should wolmanize and or paint the underside as it will be unacessable in the future for further coats of varnish. My main worry. My other questions involve reattaching the new wood. they were screwed into just fiberglass as far as I can tell. I was thinking I could drill the first hole only then attach then mark and line up the other holes one at a time. Or I was thinking of just patching the small screw holes and just redrilling when we are ready. Whats my best bet and if I do patch what should I use? thanks for any help. I have yet to look myself but he claims he cant get to the underside of the winch to remove them so we can remove the winch island. He says there is an acess hole on the starboard side but not on the port side so we may have to cut a acess hole. any thoughts/advice on this. The boat is a tartan 30 if it matters.

ok, I talked to a fellow t30 owner and have my winch issue under controll, but still would love some talk on the other issues I am facing.

If you are re using the wood or using the old wood to make exact copies of the new parts you can use the same holes. Look closely at the existing holes for evidence of water intrusion. Many times it makes sense to drill out old holes with a larger diamter bit, fill, and then drill new holes in the center of the fill with a smaller diameter. This seals the site of future water intrusion from the core (your boat has a cored deck and solid hull). If you use new holes that is fine too, but still fill the old ones.

Thickened epoxy works well for this, I have used cabosil with good results. Dental syringes are very handy to use to fill holes.

Think about saving your old wood parts if salvagable. I have found new teak to be very expensive, and not as good as the wood on these old boats. You might be surprised how old weathered teak can be brought back.

Your hatch covers look good. You can coat the underside with almost anything since it will not have UV exposure. Epoxy, paint, varnish etc. Keeping the top looking good is another matter. Water will stand on the surface, lots uv exposure and lots of abuse since you will be sitting and standing on them. I never found a perfect coating, but Cetol worked better than most. My boat now has plastic hatch covers.

After 40 years I'm afraid hardly none of the holes were worth being re-used. Are these self threading screws or should I tap a thread in the glass. I am refering to the handrails etc.... they look like they were just threaded into glass. Not sure if its a self tapping or I have to thread prior?????????????????/
