Strong Hatch required

I have one lazarette in my cockpit on the starboard side and a great empty space on the port.

That large space is BARELY accessible from the cabin, so barely that I have in fact sealed it off with marine board to keep stuff from falling into what is basically a black hole.

That means that my 28' foot sailboat has a clean dry space about 2' x 3' x 5' that is EMPTY.

Heresy!

The only real option is to cut the "seat" open and install a hatch of some sort, and then use the area for storage of lesser used items; spare sails, etc.

However, this is a high foot traffic area, which clearly calls for a STRONG hatch.

I am reluctant to spend the cash on an aluminum hatch, the grand or so required being better put towards a new mainsail.

But neither do I want any real potential for breakage and resulting injury.

Are there good strong hatches available at a price a 9-5 working guy can afford?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: Strong Hatch required

I would look at hatches marketed to the bass boat crowd. They probably make a lot more, so have better prices. For example: Tempress Marine After Market and OEM Products ... Fish-On!
