Waste deck fitting stuck

Went to have the holding tank pumped out for the first time in about 9 months. The fitting and cap are 30 year old aluminum. I have a good bronze spanner wrench but the cap would not budge. I sprayed it with PB Blaster and will try again. Other than adding length to the handle for more leverage, any suggestions?

Re: Waste deck fitting stuck

Was it a hot day? Wondering if the metal could have expanded.

I wonder if something like the equivalent of an impact driver could work; that is, hold the cap under tension with the wrench and (gently but firmly) hit the cap (not the wrench) to try to break it free.

Re: Waste deck fitting stuck

Pour vinegar on the cap making sure it gets into the threaded area then put a rag soaked in vinegar on top of the cap and leave it there for a few hours. Then try to remove it. If no joy then soak longer and try again. The vinegar will eventually get soaked into the joint and break up the corrosion.

Good luck.

Re: Waste deck fitting stuck

It was sunny but not hot. Vinegar sounds like a possibility! I was thinking that worst case I could drill 2 holes in the cap where the wrench goes, insert bolts and use a breaker bar. I rather not go there!

Re: Waste deck fitting stuck

The PB blaster will work it sometimes just takes a 2-14 hrs with repeated soakings.

Assuming you ever do get the cap open (PBlaster and patience damn well ought to do it) put a little silicon grease or TefGel on the threads when you put it back on. If you don't have at least one tube in each toolbox, this is the time to pick some up.

Re: Waste deck fitting stuck

Worse case is you replace the entire deck fitting with an all stainless one. You should probably do this anyhow. If you are in salt water, this will continue to give you problems.

Re: Waste deck fitting stuck

My very Neanderthal approach to these situations, after using the PB Blaster, is to smack the handle of the wrench with a fairly heavy hammer and hope the impact force will produce the desired results.

Re: Waste deck fitting stuck

Just remember the other half of the deck fitting is attached to the deck. To much force and you could turn the whole thing instead of just the cap. PB Blaster, Vinegar, light tapping on the cap itself aught to open it up. If not, depending on how it's installed it might be better to just replace it rather then apply too much force and tear mounting screws or something out of the deck, or doing other damage based on how it's installed.
