Removing pawls and main gear on barient winch

The directions may as well say " take all the parts off" When it comes to taking apart the pawls the directions on my tear down instruction sheet mearly says
"Remove four pawls (#20), four pawl springs (#18), and four plung ers (#19) from low range gear". I am not sure how exactally. Is it just a pressed shaft that needs to be hammered out. The main gear has a washer and a pin holding it in. Not sure if its a allen set screw or a pressed pin or what. I just dont want to start tearing stuff down without knowing the proper technique and how to put it back together. They appear to be pressed fittings that would be impossible to get back on if I were to get it apart. Unless I should be focusing on taking it off from the top of the winch. Barient 20 winch. any help appreciated.

Is this the guide you're using?

Winch Maintenance

If you didn't see this yet, there may be some additional info?

My commiserations. Having spent last Saturday replacing pawl springs on our Anderson winches I know exactly what you mean. What directions there are have printing too small to read and "remove pawls" in no way explains how to disconnect the springs allowing the pawl to slide free. Once you work it out everything is dead easy but that first winch was a right bustard.

It should all be fairly obvious once you get the lid off.. but put the hammer away - that's the last thing you should need to use on a winch. The pin you speak of is very likely an Allen bolt and you'll need a good set of Allen keys to get started. All the Allen bolts on the winch will be the same size.

It's a good idea to wrap a rag loosely around the base of the winch to (a) catch anything small that falls out as you (gently) lift the drum off and (b) to minimise the amount of grease you'll need to clean off the deck afterwards.

Useful hint: There is a right way and a wrong way to fit the springs on the pawls. If you do it wrong, you'll need to pull the winch apart again to re-do it. ;)

Yea, straight side goes on the pawl. Just dont want to take it apart before I know how it goes together. It almost looks like if I just trash the spring the pawl will come out and then just replace the pawl with the spring in its intended location. The main gear really looks like its just pinned in somehow. I dont see any threads or anything. Its a tough angle to tell. I am a mechanical contractor so I am not unfamiliar with dealing with similar type things, just new to sailing and dont want to limit my time before I get back out any longer than need be. IE, I dont want to f up my winch. Almost thinking about just leaving it as is and re greasing and oiling. I have it pretty well cleaned but would really at least like to change out the springs.

Can you post a pic or two of what you're looking at?

Barlow/Barient winches are held together with Allen bolts (usually filled with dirt and gunk) and are one of the few where absolutely everything comes apart, right down to the baseplate, so I can't believe you wouldn't be able to get at the pawls on yours somehow..

I'll get on it. In the meantime please refer to my how do I post pics thread in another section.

Just click the header.

winch - a set on Flickr

Pretty straight forward I would think. Just thought I'd ask.

These pics are better than my eyes. Maybe that is a set screw. :laugher
