Allmand 31

I may be taking a friend out on his Allmand 31. My friend is in a wheel chair and is a new owner and really doesn't know much about sailing. It will be mostly on me.

How does this boat behave In close quarters. His slip is second boat in from the end of the fairway in a just big enough slip with a pole and dock on the starboard and full length dock on the port.
He is bow in and I'm thinking that if I back out the stern should kick me port so the stern will be heading down the fairway to get out. If it will backup OK I can just keep going about 5 boat lengths backwards to get to the Chanel.

Wondering what my chances are of this boat behaving OK in reverse.

This summer for the first time I've been sailing a Bristol 32 and have not found the secret to figuring out what it will do in reverse. I'm hoping the Allmand will be more predictable.

As a former owner of an Allmand 31..they are a bear to back. Suggest that you post this on the Allmand subforum where there a couple of current owners that may be a bit more helpful..

Just took one out Saturday for a water test. The skipper took it out SLOW and used neutral liberally. Not having a deep keen amidships, the pivot point is farther aft.

I got a chance to work with the Allmand 31 and this is what I found in case anyone finds this thread.

When it was put in gear it usually started to pickup speed in either forward or reverse pretty quickly.

In gear for just two seconds then neutral for 30 seconds was about the only way to go dead slow.

It coasts for a long time, several boat lengths from ahead 2 knots.

Reverse can stop the boat but it takes some throttle to do it in any reasonable distance.

The right turn technique where you leave the helm starboard and reverse with prop walk until it starts moving backwards then hard forward until you start actually moving forward then reverse again seems like it might work but will probably take a little more than the length of the boat. Need to try that again.

Once the bow swung port instead of starboard. I'm assuming I allowed too much reverse way but I'll have to try it again.


In short it was not as responsive as a fin keel but not as bad as the Bristol 32 which so far is the worse.

There was not enough wind for me to tell how much the bow tends to blow down from freeboard and cabin windage.

The Bristol 32 is very very sensitive to windage especially in reverse.

I just got done moving my Allmand 31 in and out of four different slips and one long dock (fuel dock), including a 180 degree turn inside a fairly tight fairway. Except for some issues getting away from the fuel dock (the davits on my stern were the problem due to wind direction and the proximity of other boats), the boat seemed to handle just fine. I agree, it coasts for a long time, and I used neutral a lot as I crept up on the slips. A quick burst of reverse at the end seemed to slow us just fine. In reverse, it seemed to pull a little, but wasn't as bad as I expected.

Labor day weekend was GREAT! We had to motor the boat from Anacortes to everett, WA and got to experiment with backin up. From a dead stop... idle reverse, the stern absolutely pulls to port regardless of where the rudder is, UNTILL you get some headway, then it's business as usual. SLOW in and out is the trick with this heavy lady I supect.
