Chain Plates and Mast Tang Question
 
Why are chain plates built and installed with a much stronger design than the tang they attach to on the mast? Most sail boats have a very long and large cross section chain plate held with many bolts, then it attaches to a relatively small tang held by one bolt on the mast. We seem to concentrate most on the condition of the chain plate but what about the mast tangs and bolt?

the many bolts are because of the material that they are attached to. the fiberglass or wood hull/ bulkhead are no where near as strong as the aluminum mast material

But the interesting thing it always seems the chain plate fails by cracking right at the deck penetration. I realize that with stainless this is probably due to stress corrosion cracking. So if I use say silicon bronze, would this not be a better material? And I would think the small mast tang would see a lot of fatigue failures as the mast (even in a well tuned rig) has a lot of movement due to normall stresses it sees.

I replaced all the tangs before going offshore. Earlier this year when I had the mast out I found a tang at the mast head with a small crack, replaced this one as well. So, yes the tangs do fail....
