my ericson 35 mII has a wheel cockpit and forward of wheel cockpit is a rudderpost end with tiller attachments anda dzerk fitting for lubing rudder post..... the beeeeyooooteeeefulll tiller which installs completely within 10 seconds and is ready to go , so one could use either with that boat... is a cool feature...the tiller is gorgeous laminated teak with a fitting on end for this purpose. came with boat..

My spirit 23 has a tiller and I enjoy the responsiveness of it. I race on a CnC 34 that has a wheel and that is nice as well, cable not hydraulic, and it is responsive as well. I did bring a Tarton 30ish(dont remember) from Gulfport after Challenge cup and it had a tiller. I like both, but if I were to go cruising, it would definitely be a wheel. There is a better connection to the boat with a tiller, alsmot romantic in a way, the tiller is part of your arm and you a part of the boat. But I would enjoy either if it meant sailing.

I guess that's really my question; what would be better all around as a cruiser. I think the design of the linkage is a big factor. From a maintenance and reliability stance at least as well as the feedback. I've never used a wheel in any form so please excuse my ignorance, should try to find someones before I make any more considerations. If I retain my tiller I would want to design a spring of some sort to keep it at above knee height to keep it up off the deck and at arms reach, maybe that technology already exists? The minutia of planning for this is both an exciting pleasure and tedious research nightmare. Thanks for the help and patience.

It's usually easy enough to put some sort of spacer under the tiller head to elevate the tiller and keep it from dropping or needing to be 'held up' in use. It depends on the design of the rudder stock/tiller head connection, but often there's either an adjustment screw or a place to add some kind of spacer for that purpose.

I'm sure others. At disagree but if I were cruising, I would definitely not have a tiller. Depending on what drive you have for your helm (cable or hydraulic) you don't have to worry as much about if you have to let go of the control and the rudder goes hard over and the boat turns around. This might be dangerous considering the boom may swing over the cockpit. Hydraulic would be the best to hold a rudder without you having to babysit it as much as cable. And cable more so than a tiller. Granted there is more moving parts to cable and more so on hydraulic system. Honestly if you get a good hydraulic system, one that isn't too small for the boat, you should have for the most part worry free steering. I have had hydraulic steering on our shrimp boat (dual rudder single ram) for years and never had any issues. And repairing a ram is relatively easy, it's only a few parts and you can buy kits with everything. I believe you only need basic tools and just a spanner wrench, and keeper ring pliers.

But that's my take on it all. I enjoy a tiller on my day sailer but wouldn't want to have to baby sit it all day cruising. And I know you can throw Bungee cords on it to hold a tiller but then you lose the case of tiller being more out of the way than a helm.

For simplicity, I can't see anything better than my transom-hung rudder. Pintles and gudgeons. All visible, all easy to repair. Not saying it's the best rudder, but from a simplicity standpoint, I can't see how anything could be simpler.

I do think my rudder is more vulnerable to transom shocks, be they from a hit from behind, or stern breaking waves, although nothing like this has ever happened to me -- yet (never say never ).

As for the hight question, ours maintains whatever level we set it at using simple friction at the hinge. Stainless bracket holds our large tiller. Rotates on the vertical plan nearly 90 degrees, so can be elevated to any level (and stays there), including nearly vertical.

Easy, solid, simple. Great for cruising.

Why go fast, when you can go slow.

it's funny, every sailboat I have owned or sailed on.. had a tillar. I have never dealt with wheel steering

I say just keep the damn tiller and spent the money on my boat. Or use it for yours but either way dont waste it on a wheel conversion. Even though its obvious that you will anyway.
