hook to hang a lantern

I just bought a very nice hand-crafted hanging oil lamp which I intend to hang above the table in my saloon. Luckily, I have a nice 3/4" thick piece of marine ply in the overhead there which I think will make an excellent surface to anchor to. I'm having a lot of trouble finding something to screw into it though. What I really want is a nice beefy "safety cup hook", which is like a normal cup hook except it has a latch to prevent the thing that's hanging from falling off the hook (as is prone to happen on a boat that moves, as opposed to a stationary house). The only ones I can find look like cheap crap. My backup plan of a shoulder eye screw has similarly struck out -- they seem to all have machine screw ends, not wood screw, and I feel the shoulder is necessary for strength and also looks. Finding either type in stainless or brass has proven difficult. Does anyone know a source for some suitably marine-grade hook? How do you hang your lanterns?

I screwed in a padeye and then hung a small carabiner from it. no way for the lantern to come loose.

Re: hook to hang a lantern

I too screwed in a padeye and then hung a a "S" shaped brass hook formed from brass welding (brazing) rod. Look nautical and works great.
