Replacement Sail Dimensions

Greetings all!

I am considering purchasing a Morgan 30/2, whose sails are in tawdry shape. However, I am able to get some very lightly used sails from an old Allied Chance 30/30 at very reasonable prices. The Morgan becomes less good of a deal if I immediately have to buy new sails.

So my question is, how closely do the different sail dimensions have to be for the sails to be interchangeable?

The sail dimensions of the Morgan are:
I: 43.00' / 13.11m J: 13.67' / 4.17m
P: 38.00' / 11.58m E: 11.00' / 3.35m

and the sail dimensions of the Chance 30/30 are:
I: 42.00' / 12.80m J: 14.00' / 4.27m
P: 36.85' / 11.23m E: 10.25' / 3.12m

That seems really close to me, but I'm fairly new to this, and certainly not a sail maker...

Thanks in advance everyone!!

[Looks like the main may fit, but the foot is a bit long and will be past the black line. You may not be able to tighten the outhaul.

The genny has less luff, so you may have a halyard wrap problem if you don't add a short pennant. This assumes a furler. If no furler, you are fine.

Re: Replacement Sail Dimensions

Actually the foot of the Chance main is shorter.. 10.25 vs 11.00 so will fit OK but be slightly short on the boom. The hoists are shorter on the Chance sails so they'll fit but you'll lose a bit of sail area - probably not enough to notice unless you're racing. The difference in the J measurements for the genny are probably negligible.

Used 'make do' sails will get you going but ultimately are not ideal and you'll probably end up at some point getting something that's a better fit.

For the Genny the LP measurement and clew height are other important considerations to ensure that the existing tracks will provide a good sheeting angle.

Re: Replacement Sail Dimensions

Your correct about the main Faster - I was reading the wrong numbers. Main will work but be just slightly small.

With regard to the genny, does the Morgan have a furler or use hanks? What about the Chance? If a furler you need the correct size luff tape and the sun cover needs to be on the correct side depending on the rotation of the drum. If both use hanks, you should have no problem.

Re: Replacement Sail Dimensions

Sound it sounds like, it could work, but it'd be a bit of a hassle, and more of a kluge fix than I was hoping for - thanks so much guys!
