Lewmar Hatch Panel - Adhesive
I have a small Lewmar hatch that, to my great surprise, has its locking handle GLUED to the acrylic panel. The handle (plastic) came off and it needs to be reglued. The glue that''s on there now appears to be a dark brown or black color.
Anybody know what kind of glue/adhesive I should use? George |

Lewmar Hatch Panel - Adhesive
Hi GordonMay,
I''m assuming the material you''re referencing is the hatch panel. I do not know what that material is made of. But if I''m understanding you correctly and it is that material,do you have a recommendation for the adhesive? George |
Lewmar Hatch Panel - Adhesive
George You are right, about hatch cover being built of that stuff. And; Gord is right (he usually is). The first site listed on Goggle gives it as -- methyl methacrylate. This site does not give us the adhesive to use, but it is interesting reading. --------------- http://www.psrc.usm.edu/macrog/pmma.htm I am still looking. Walt Ward |
Has anyone come up with the proper glue for this? We've tried about 5 different types of adhesive and can't get this handle to stay attached to the hatch. Rather than order a whole new hatch, I'm considering drilling a hole int e hatch an screwing or bolting this thing in.

Lewmar glue on hatch handle
In case this is still an open question, I just went through this. Have Lewmar low profile size 10 hatch. Latch broke at the piece glued on the hatch lens. Latches are glued on at the factory and was not able to find anyone that can re-glue or help. There are (were) 2 options:
1. purchase a new new lens. The lens has a gasket and the frame is split (2 piece). Separate the 2 pieces of the frame, slide out the old lens and gasket, slide in the new one and reassemble the frame. 2. purchase a new hatch and swap out the tops by pulling the hinge pins. Not cheap but goes fairly easily. I went with number 2 since it is pretty cold here and i wanted it to go quickly and didn't want to fool with the gasket in the cold. Right after I finished I learned from Lewmar that they have now changed the design to bolt through latches and going forward the latches will be replaceable without replacing the lens. Obviously some suppliers will be trying to move the older glue-on models so try to get replacement lenses or hatches with the new feature if you think the latches will break with any frequency. I have only had one out of 8 break so far and I have no idea why it broke. Hope this helps. Kirk s/v Ainulindale |
