Auto prop

I purchased a 1993 Catalin 42 that came with a Autoprop. I love the prop but when I shift from forward to reverse (or vise versa) there is a loud thud (or sometimes even a bang) as the blades swing around. I always give the blades time to feather before shifting and make sure our boat speed is not to fast. I talked with the broker who sold us the boat and he assured me it was the right prop for the boat(he ordered it).
is there some maintinance that should be performed.some times I fear the key on the prop shaft may not take this amount of torque. we sail the great lakes so the boat will be on the hard soon, would like to clear this up before next season.

Thanks for your help on this
Bill

It could be the cutless bearing is getting worn. The other reason may be the type of grease you are using to grease the hub is not to spec and it is washing out. Thirdly, everything wears out after awhile. Check for any wear in the blades and hub. Fourth, perhaps the shaft and prop have somehow gone out of balance. This could happen if the cutless is worn. All of this can be checked on the hard.

Author, both the shaft and cutlass bearing are new. the old keyway gave way at the start of the season. mechanic did an engine alignment also. he did not have much in the way of advice for the prop.

Thanks for the reply
