How can I identify the waterline from inside?

Is there an easy or simple way to correctly identify the waterline while inside the boat? I'm contemplating an overhaul of the head system and need to install an airgap above the waterline but space is tight...

I would think if you are in still water, you could measure down from the deck joint outside, then make the same measurement inside (assuming you can locate the joint from inside. Or use any other reference point.

Attach a "water level" to an underwater thru hull fitting.

I would try a hand held infra red thermometer and shine it on the inside of the hull to see if can find the boundary between the water temperature and the air temperature.

A long piece of soft transparent tubing (tygon) temporarily attached to any open through hull with the end carefully held above the waterline would flood to the same height... should work!

not only that.. but as long as the majority of the hose were kept beneath the waterline.. you could use it anywhere aboard as water will -always- seek it's own level

I think post #2 will get me close enough, I was just wondering if there was some old mariners trick to it. Thanks for all the suggestions...

Correct. That is a water level.:)

So, I take it that my idea of: drilling a series of holes from the top down until water starts streaming in... is not going to win? :)
