Rudder Broke Away

I lost my rudder yesterday - it looks like an old stress crack that finally let go?
Anyway I need to replace the rudder of an Anacapri Erica 24 (haha yeah what are the chances?)

Plan B is then to rebuild the thing. I am chasing down some dimensions and I think I should be able to make a better one than they made back in the 1970's with the materials we have now.

Any opinions on the materials I should use? The top has to be very strong as that is the only attachment and support. The attached picture is of the only part of the old one I have left - and this is the mounting area that goes into the stainless steel rudder mount under the boat..

Re: Rudder Broke Away

You might check at newrudders.com to see if they have anything that will fit. I think they use molds to form two halves of a FRP shell, bond the halves together and fill with some proprietory foam.

Alternatively a CNC router can shape foam halves, which you'd bond together, and coat with glass. North End Composites, Rockland, ME does this but there must be a vendor closer to you.
