Mr. Chef, your 26 has the outboard engine right? If so that really helps keep costs under control. If it just cost you a few hundred bucks to get it towed to your place, that is not much of a risk, money wise. That is a good way to get into sailing if you ask me.

This winter I will map out the spots that puff up on the deck from the freezing in the plywood core. I'm thinking of marking them with green painters tape and taking photos, then removing the tape(so it doesn't look so silly). That way in the warm weather if I choose to repair something I will know how far the worst of the water damage is.

Here is a link noting condition upon arrival at my house. I already soft scrubbed the cockpit and WOW it looks amazing! Now to finish cleaning the mold out of the interior so I can check for leaksand at least work in a clean environment.

I'm a real hack when repairing old boats so if you like 'pretty' - stop reading right here.
I would use a pressure treated board (on the inside) as a backing for the new rail, which would have rail posts made of pressure treated wood (or teak), filling the holes on top of the cabin with a fiberglass patch. I would drill a few holes from the inside (in the low spots of delamination) to drain the core so that the freeze damage is minimal. Trying to fix 'right' an old boat like that is usually not worth the money.

Umm, ouch. That looks bad, really bad. The rot at the keel/hull joint may be terminal if the rot at the deck/cabin trunk line isn't. I've cleaned up really really dirty smelly boats before, but I did so knowing that they were sound hulls. I don't think I'd spend 10 minutes on this one. I'd salvage the rig, motor, and whatever I can unbolt from the hull and get rid of the rest. Sorry to be so blunt, but if you want to go sailing, there are much better ways.

Copy pasting the url doesn't work for me... Really hoping to see how the deck looks.

Never mind, mucking around with the url got it to work!

So looking at the video, I have a few comments:

- Is the hull solid fiberglass? If it is, there would be no rot between the hull and keel, just nasty old caulking and fairing compound?

- There seems to be a long crack along the deck, maybe where the front end of the cabin wall meets it? That would affect the structural strength of the deck.

- I think krisscross's suggestion of drilling drainage holes is a good one. It could also help assess things.

- You have the same Kobalt channel lock pliers I have!

I am very familiar with Grampians and if the cabin trunk is wet around the grab rails mounts ( as per your photo of sitting water), I guarantee the entire trunk top is saturated with extensive balsa degradation (compost). Re-coring by a pro with the proper tools and experience would be at least 100hrs. labour for the inexperienced probably four times that much.

As to repairing from above or below ... have you ever tried to wall paper a ceiling ?
Resin soaked glass fiber is much heavier and not as stiff as wet paper.

You will never recoup the expense of a repair like this. As long as the bulkhead supporting the mast step and the shroud chain plate knees are sound, consider it a disposable boat, go sail it and don't waste time or money on repairs

Kind of a difficult question to answer but neither percussive sounding nor moisture meters will work on frozen structure. get a small hammer put some masking tape on it and get a neighbour with a relatively new boat to let you tap it to see what good core sounds like. Good core will produce a solid "click" and almost no bounce back of the hammer. Wet core will give a dull thump with little bounce back and core that has rotted and separated from the FRP will give a pronounced bounce back sort of like hitting a drum skin. It does not take long to get the hang of it if you listen carefully. There is no need to hit hard, just gentle taps letting the fall of the hammer do the work.

This is one of the few areas where a moisture meter will be quite accurate so
if you can borrow one it would take all of five minutes to map out the entire trunk.

Mr. Chef, what year is your boat? I think the 26 was produced till Grampian folded in the late 70's?

boatpoker, so when the water freezes in the core it won't really be visible by looking for bulges in the deck?

I've tapped here and there on the deck and found variations in several areas. It comes and goes depending on how far I am from leaks where the deck hardware is located. Some areas are just fine, others sound dull. I haven't found much that sounds like a drum.

To bad the moisture meter is a bit on the expensive side. I think I might buy one when I go looking for boat #2. Seems like a very usefull tool for older boats.
