Bonus! found autopilot - need help

I am happy to report that i may have found a working linear drive in my boat. (45 Colorado) attached is a picture. Let's hope it works. Not sure of its history. What other parts do i need to make it work? I'm new at this stuff. I have a garmin 740s chart plotter that may can be used. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Bonus! found autopilot - need help

Looks like a Raymarine ram.. your Gamin plotter WILL NOT drive the autopilot.. you'll need a Raymarine Control head and controller of similar vintage, though some of the newer stuff may work with the older ram.

Once you have a fully functional autopilot you may be able to get it to track routes and waypoints from your plotter, but it will not 'be' the autopilot itself.

Great... thanks. Do you know a model number of the control head and a controller that will work. You were correct on the raymarine part.

You'll need to do a little research but this might be a place to start..

Re: Bonus! found autopilot - need help

In addition to the ram, you'll need a brain box, a fluxgate compass, and a control head.

If the OP 'found' the ram below (with no evidence of a working pilot on deck) it's equally likely there's a flux gate hiding somewhere too...

Re: Bonus! found autopilot - need help

For a complete Autopilot, you will need the Ram (which you have found), a Rudder reference, fluxgate compass, control head and a computer.

Look on the drive and see if there is a label saying "Type 1" or "Type 2".

Type 2 is a beefier motor and you will need a larger computer to drive it.

Follow the wires from the drive to see if you can locate the computer.

You can look on ebay and search for the parts so you will know what you are looking for. The rudder reference and fluxgate compass always look the same. The computers and control heads vary a lot.
