Any one know a thing or two about booms

I have a tartan 30 with might be a seldon boom. I believe the mast is a seldon. I would like to replace the outhall as the line is getting frayed. Its a line where I pull on it but on the front of the boom it is cable. I'm thinking I could pull it through with a extra line attached to pull the new one back through? Any pointers would be great. Also I would like to get the reefing system working again. I just bought the boat this year and there are two pullies for a jiffy reef system but no line. I am not real familiar with the system but sure I will learn. My research begins here with this post. Thanks for any help.

Is this jiffy reefing no more that a line tied onto a reef point then ran through a block on the boom and over to a cleat?

Harken

As to your out haul, be sure your wire has not chewed up sheave internal to the boom. We had to replace a sheave on our old boom to fix the out haul. Use a low stretch line like Amsteel for the new out haul line.

Or, just attach the new line to the old and pull it through. And I'm with Caleb here, ditch the wire rope outhaul and go with a low stretch hybrid line. New England Rope's Endura-Braid, with its Dyneema core and polyester cover, it will work well at the winch end too.

I have a picture of the new & old sheave for my boom's outhaul rigging.
Wire rope wore through the sheave making it useless.

There is a pretty good chance that you have two blocks in your boom which gives you "purchase" when pulling on your outhaul. My 30 foot boat has four to one which means I pull four inches of line to get the outhaul to move one inch, but you get four times the force assuming no friction.

Just try it and see. If so then it is a bit more complicate to replace but I did mine.

Actually, I do not believe that is a jiffy reefing system. Jiffy reefing was just another name for a two line reefing system. That illustration shows a very crude single line system, and one that would work extremely poorly on a boat a large as a Tartan 30.

A two line reefing system would be the hot ticket in terms of low friction, first cost, and ease of operation.

I didn't know that to be the case. I always considered the term jiffy reefing as somewhat generic to a reefing system that uses line(s), rather than a manual set of the cringle and tack.

You might want to find out from other owners or from showing people a picture of the end of the boom to learn how to remove the end cap on the boom to let you see inside with a light to get an idea of how things are run inside the boom and what the condition of the sheaves (pulleys to landfolk) and lines inside are. Then you'd know whether you just want to use the old line as a messenger to pull the new line through, or whether there's perhaps a bit more work to be done inside the boom. Besides sheaves getting chewed up, they might have possibly gotten seized up with corrosion, or out of line or partly dismounted or some such, or a line could have jumped off a sheave, etc.

I'm not sure that amsteel or dyneema is as important for an outhaul, as for a halyard. Generally, they are much shorter and the stretch would have less an impact. Maybe for a racer, it matters (as much psychologically). For a cruiser, I see no need.
