Thank you, Alex W, 4arch - I never dug into the settings that deep; I just let the A/P go through its Auto Learn process. The response level setting helped quite a bit, but it wasn't quite enough. Rudder gain, rudder damping, auto-trim ... these may actually cure the problem short of anything more expensive.

Bigger batteries might be an option, too, I suppose.
