JRC Radar Quality ??

I have been searching for a Radar/Chartplotter system and had decided that I had to spend $3000 until I came across the JRC1800CP. It can be purchased for under $1600.

Such a big price difference between this unit and RayMarine makes me VERY suspicious. Is anyone using JRC radar unmits (or any other products) and what type of quility do they deliver?

I''m not a marine electronics geek, but I do have an integrated Raymarine radar, chartplotter, autopilot system installed by the prior owner. I am also sorry to say that I cannot share my experience with the system until after my first upcoming season. It certainly was impressive during the sea trial. Although, most Raymarine users I know at my marina seem very satisfied by their equipment.

However, I have been told by other sailboaters that some JVC models have a low amperage draw, which of course is good when sailing. Whether that equates to a weak signal and poor performance may not be the obvious conclusion. First hand users, step up to bat.

Hi

I have the JRC 1800 radar/chartplotter and couldn''t be happier. I sail in the Pacific Northwest with lots of fog.
The chartplotter uses CMAP cartridges.

Magnus - My intention would be to install it at the helm and I want to do my planning at the nav station, while at anchor. Do you happen to use a laptop then upload to the JRC (if so, what software package)? Do you have it interfaced with anything else?

Hi

My display is at the nave station. I don''t have it interfaced with anything else. I also run Nobeltec with raster charts and use the chartplotter as a completely independant system for redundancy and safety (you know, for when I may get that common "blue screen" on the computer!!).

I like my systems independant for safety. If one goes I want backups to my backups...

I have had a JRC interfaced (as a repeater for the waypoints) via NMEA to the GPS and Nexus for four years. Love having the waypoints come up on the radar. Lot''s of fog here in Channel Islands area of S. CA. It''s been good for our uses, especially when we have the guard band active.
