EMS gauge removal

I have old ~4" EMS bulkhead mounted wind speed and depth gauges that I would like to remove. Anyone know how? Does the exterior weather ring unscrew? If so, is there a tool for that? I don't see any conventional screws anywhere.

Also, any suggestions for plugging the resulting holes? I would like to install a small chart plotter bracket over one of the openings.

Thanks.

Re: EMS gauge removal

Welcome to the forum!

It's like this: if you work on your boat... sometimes you look at something and just have to figure it out. Unless someone here has that exact item in the exact same kind of mounted position, your not going to get too many answers. So, have a look on the back side. Do an internet search for the instruments, might get lucky. Most likely any mounting is back there and the gauge will pull out from the opposit side. Plugging holes can be a pain and end up "not-so-pretty". Why not leave the dead gauge in the hole?

Dave e's right, Just will take a little prying and fiddling to figure it out. As far as plugging the holes; you can make some teak plugs that have a lip on the outside. They will protrude from your bulkhead though.

Re: EMS gauge removal

The wiring connections are at the back of the instrument so look for access there. There is usually some sort of clamping/securing devise on the back, once you expose it should be a screw driver and not much else. BUT, beware of the siliconed in place face, so you might need to get behind the bulkhead flange on the instrument with a putty knife or similar.

Teak makes a good cover if you are ok with maintaining the teak, and you should be able to screw from behind to secure. With the Hunter 23 being mostly molded FG instead of a lot of exterior wood 1/4" acrylic might also work and eliminate the maintenance. Filling the holes works, but expect it to weather different than original.

Re: EMS gauge removal

Most likely they are secured by a ring w/ set screws from the back side.
