Favorite Boat Shoe???

I need to get myself a good quality boat shoe and I would like to hear your opinions on the matter. Obviously we all know about Sperry, but I was hoping for more detailed opinions as to the style of shoe you prefer and why? I like the look of canvas for shoes, but the cheap pair of wannabe boat shoes I have make my feet sweat like crazy and they stink to high heaven. They also seem to take a while to dry. My dad and grandpa have always had the leather Sperry's but I have never worn them so I don't know how they react with the feet.

So any help you guys can provide would be appreciated,
Zac

Re: Favorite Boat Shoe???

If it's not raining, not particularly snorty or I'm not racing, I wear a pair of Keen sandals. With a pair of thick socks they are fine through the winter here (although not necessarily a style statement), and worn alone, fine through the summer.
I have a pair of WM trainers (sneakers I guess for you North American lot) which are OK. I have a pair of Perry Topsiders somewhere but almost never wear them. And then finally a pair of Viking rubber boots.

So far Men's Billfish 3-Eye Boat Shoe is my favorite. Decent grip, dries out quick, feet don't seem to sweat as with others (eg, Slam). Seem to be made fairly well - I had mine for close to 8 years now. Also they come in all widths.

Re: Favorite Boat Shoe???

I'm on my third pair of Sperry Kingfisher ASV's. They have a narrow width at the arch which really supports my arch and that along with the ASV saves my aching feet. Also very sure footed on deck.

I wear the Sperry Billfish also and like them. I have a wide foot and not all shoes fit but these do. You're right, feet don't sweat either. Funny though, googling I found them in the US at higher prices than in Canada.

I love my vibrams on the boat. Almost as comfortable as barefoot, but you can't burn your feet on the deck, and the grip is great.

Re: Favorite Boat Shoe???

I have been wearing the Sperry's for many years and love them. On your issues with stinky feet/shoes... I was in construction for many years and had this issue too. It is from sweating and no air to dry them out. Bacteria grows in worm moist areas, Like your arm pits. Killing the bacteria kills the smell, suggested a wet nap alcohol wipe for the pits is a quick solution. "Foot odor occurs when excess perspiration from your feet soaks the lining of your shoes and socks. Perspiration creates an optimal environment for bacteria which can grow and cause a bad odor." For the feet I found using the Dr Sholls inserts worked great. You just need something to soak up the sweet and some air circulation to solve this. I buy the cheap $1 each air pads, you cut to size Odor-X® Odor Reducing Insoles with SweatMAX® | Dr. Scholl's®

Re: Favorite Boat Shoe???

For general sailing i really like to wear "crocks" they are light weight and have excellent grip. You might think that they would fall off easily but they don't, they also float. When I am racing I have a pair of WM(or other) Sailing sneaker, I like those for the additional support.
As for foot odor try wool socks preferably a "smart wool" or Marino wool these don't itch and they wick away the moisture.
Happy New Year
Peter
