mast cleaner

I have my mast down (aluminum) and would like to clean it. Any suggestions for a good product to use?

Is the mast painted? In that case I use kerosene.

There is an article on mast refurbishment in the Jan 05 issue of "Good Old Boat". They recommend sanding with aluminum oxide sand paper.

I used a fine 220 or higher sand paper then did a coat of wax on it. Can''t tell you how it will hold up as I just did this a month ago.
