Does anyone have any suggestions on good 12v fans (with cages or protection around them)? I'm looking for the strong and silent type

Depending what you are using them for, try PC cooling fans. Believe it or not, they move a considerable amount of air and are very quiet, and very cheap (used). Not sure about long term durability though.

I agree. Commonly called muffin fans, they are readily available at electronic surplus outlets. If you want new, try a place like Fry's.
What you're looking for are CPU case fans. They're easy to mount and wire up.
I would recommend buying them online, as you'll pay much less for them. For example, one of my favorite sites, Newegg.com has them starting around $2, or with a safety cage for around $10. Amazon.com also carries them.
If you like the instant gratification of driving to a place, plopping down cash, and leaving with your goods in hand, then try your local tech super center like Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry's, Circuit City or MicroCenter. Even Staples and Office Depot often carry CPU case fans.
They make them in various sizes, with the larger 120 mm fans being quieter and moving more air than the smaller ones. I used some of the 40 mm fans for cooling the nav console/electrical panel on my friend's boat.

yeah, case fans move a tremendous amount of air for their size.
If you ever have one fail in your computer, and get a glimpse of the mound of melted-together computer components you'll be replacing, then you'll fully appreciate how much air they move.
To cool a boat may take two or three of them, but at $10 a pop, thats a bargain at twice the price.
You can use them to move air around the cabin to cool people, but the smaller ones are great for cooling or ventilating lockers, which can help prevent mold/mildew problems and in the case of equipment lockers prolong the life of the equipment.
