I think it depends on how you figure to use your batteries. If you are going to use you starting battery to run your house lights when the deep cycle dies - get two deep cycles. If your starting is really going to be pretty much that, then get a starter as they are cheaper.
Most batteries are killed as opposed to dying naturally. Most deaths occur over the off season when we neglect to keep our batteries charged properly.
My research ended in getting the (2) deep cycle batteries. Seemed the sensible thing to do with the 25 HP Universal. I did get seven seasons with one deep cycle and one dual-purpose.....
