Hello all,
First post here and a new boat owner. I recently purchased a Santana 30/30 (1984) and am in the process of making some minor updates to various components. I noticed the previous owner did not have a
battery charger, so I am installing one. I will probably be replacing the batteries soon as well. I recently purchased a Pro Mariner charger that works in 4 stages and can charge 3 different battery banks (20 amps total output). At present, there are two batteries on the boat. These are wired with one positive from each side of the selector switch. There are two negatives running to each battery with a single connection running between the two negative connections.
My question is what is the best way to wire this charger into the circuit so that the batteries won''t be adversely affected based on the position of the selector switch.
I would like to wire the charger to each battery, but I am wondering if this will cause problems when the batteries are connected in parallel since in parallel the voltage of each battery will need to be the same. I recently obtained two boat electronics books, but specific information regarding my issue is not completely addressed.
Thanks for any info regarding this question!
