Sail Drives

I have 2 Volvo Saildrives that appear to be pitting. Has anyone had experience with maintaining these? Do they require just a primer? Or an epoxy base coat.

Thanks,

I had a Buhk saildrive for 14 years. When I bought the boat we stripped all of the bottom paint and coated the sail drive with WEST System epoxy. I never had a problem with corrosion for the rest of the time that I owned the boat.

That said, some Volvo saildrives have internal water passages and those saildrives fail from the inside out and there is not much that you can do about it.

Hi Jeff - Thanks for the note. Did you strip the saildrive down to bare metal? Not sure I want to take that on, but doesn''t seem that epoxy over a paint base is a good idea.

GordMay - Thanks for the link. I have just spent the weekend with my saildrives and have learned a bit. Taken them down to bare aluminum and started over. Probably more than needed, but I wasn''t sure just how these had been treated. So I now have 4 coats of 2 part epoxy primer and will have 3 coats of anti-foul before splashing on Monday. I used all Interlux, as they seemed to be the only one that had a full program for Aluminum.

Best Regards,
