Diesel Overhaul - What to Expect

OK - I''m an admitted newbie but one of decent mechanical skill. Have rebuilt gasoline engines in the past and understand diesel basics & injectors.
Buying a boat with a 88hp Yanmar 4TH2DTE having 4,400+ hours on it. My assumption is that she will need rebuild. Not afraid to tackle this myself but have not been able to locate any good resources for repair manuals, etc.

Looking for tips, experiences from others who have gone through overhauling their engines. If I hire a professional, what can I expect for shop rate labor or overall cost? I assume upwards of $5K...

Thanks in advance,

Go to www.marinedieseldirect.com and sign up for the forums there. Then ask away. The site is run by Torresen Marine, a Yanmar dealer, and they are loads of help. You also can search their site for specific info about your particular engine and no doubt abtain the shop manual for it. They are great to work with. Good luck.
