Virginia Property tax on boats

I have heard that in the Portsmouth, Norfolk area that this tax does not apply. There is only a nominal registration fee. Would appreciate advice on this and any source for this information. Is this only if your home port is this area?

Virginia Property tax on boats

True..there is presently no annual personal property tax in that area and I think Hampton too. This applies to boats which are docked there. You can''t just claim them as a home port and then keep them in a different county to avoid the tax.
Many people from out of state also confuse personal property tax with sales tax. ALL of Virginia requires a sales tax to be paid on the purchase of a vessel or on the importation of a vessel into the state which has not had sales tax paid onn it elsewhere. Sales tax is a one time event...personal property tax is an every year event and you can get rates county by county in Virgina on the county web sites.
The registration fee is indeed nominal and is good for 5 years as I recall.
