I''m asking for marine binoculars with a compass from Santa. Are there any reviews anyplace? Any comments on the best one to get?

Asking Santa, a guy who flies most of the time and is a land lubber when not isn''t the best source for marine hardware advise.

Captain denr suggests that you consider the Fujinon, I have given mine to many a sailor to use, everyone comments about the clarity, balance, quality and ease of use.

Santa may know something about gifts but doesn''t know squat about binoculars!

They''re pricy, but after using my Steiner 7x50 Commanders for two seasons and comparing with others used by friends, they are worth every penny. Shop around for the best price . . . considerable variations.

jack-

I''ve had Fujinons with the internal compass for 5 years. They work so well that a bulky set of Canon stabilized binoculars sit in their case unused. The "knee" in the price vs. performance curve is somewhere in the $150 - $200 range. More expensive is better, but at an increasingly disproportionate cost!

Sure Santa does, Denr...how do you think he watches you all the time to find out when you''ve been bad!

Just got the Fujinon Mariner II DIF-XL (idivid focus, digital compass, reticule rangefinder) This model is based on the "big eye" twist-up (instead of rubber fold down) eye cups. Eye relief is spectacular at about 24mm

Descriptions from vendors may vary for the 7x50wpcII-if, however the mfg part # is 7107757.

Spacing between the tubes is a hair narrower than the WMarine branded ones, and that narrower spacing suits me an my glasses just fine.

Like them a lot - our second pair of Fujinons. Price was very good.

You might want to tell Santa to call Eagle Optics - http://www.eagleoptics.com/

I''ve purchased binoculars for sailing, birding and gifts from Eagle and been quite satisfied. I''ve also found them to be quite knowledgeable and helpful, not pushy at all and the prices competitive.

Usual disclaimer: I have no ....

My recollection of practical sailor''s review was that 7x was as high as was practical with the movement of a boat. Some say 6x is about right, I own 7x that were a gift from the Admiral.
