Re: Rudder Gland Repack and Reseal

We had a similar problem - water in the bilge after sailing. Found out what was causing it when the rudder cable U-bolts worked loose and I started getting a shower each time we surfed down a wave while I tried to tighten them. At rest, the joint is above the waterline. Had to drop out of that race. Luckily we were able to repack it without having to haul the boat.

Re: Rudder Gland Repack and Reseal

When we bought the boat it had a frozen rudder. Tried forever with every penetrating concoction imaginable plus heat to free it finally had to cut the tube off the shaft to get it all dropped. New tube and packing had to be fit but all has been fine since. Pictures on this forum somewhere. It was both a painful and very educational start to boat ownership for us.
