handheld gps

looking to buy a backup GPS; dumb question: can I use the same Navionics chip that is for my onboard chartplotter to download software to a handheld gps that does not come with marine software? does the chip have to stay connected or can it be downloaded into a handheld gps with sufficient size memory?
thanks.
