Generator noise/vibration

I have a question about reducing generator noise and vibration.

I've got a Panda 4kW generator mounted aft of the aft cabin in a large cockpit lazarette; it's mounted on a shallow platform which is in turn mounted against the hull. The mount is fiberglassed and made of 3/4 inch marine plywood. Panda recommended that the installer mount it on two beams or joists rather than on a flat surface. If it were to be mounted on a flat piece of plywood, Panda then recommended cutting large holes in the plywood surface to keep resonance with the hull to a minimum. Unfortunately, my installer ignored both requests and basically created a hollow box against the hull and mounted the generator on the top of the shallow box with no holes.

So, my question at this point is this: if I cut holes in the top surface and in the low side panels, will my generator noise be significantly reduced? Or should I fill the hollow with some soundproofing material?

The generator noise is mostly one of vibration against the hull (I know, big shock there). I'm not planning on building an enclosure for the generator since open air noise is acceptable and the Panda has a decent lead-lined cover anyway. I mostly want to lower the vibration noise which can be heard quiet readily in the main cabin (40 foot boat).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,
Mark

Cutting holes in the "box" can only help the vibration so I think that is the place to start. If that fails to reduce the vibration enough, then you might think about re-mounting the generator to the box with some joists through bolted to your box with some rubber between the two to dampen out the vibes.

Thanks

I've been planning the holes anyway so I'm going to go ahead. Interesting suggestion about the additional mounting arrangement. I'll look into it but I don't think I have enough clearance above the generator to raise it higher than it is (the corner of the generator cover is about 2 inches below the cockpit floor).
