Outboard Motor Shaft Length
What is the technical procedure for determining the proper length of an outboard motor shaft. I have a Newport 17 daysailor.

Usually you have only two choices in shaft length: short and long. Almost all sailboats would do well to go with a long shaft.

Outboard Motor Shaft Length
I recently purchased a Johnson 3hp with a short shaft for my Picnic 17 and mounted it on a bracket with 10 inches of movement and it worked out fine.
