Yanmar 2QM15 Problem

I have a 20 year old Yanmar 15hp in my 34 Irwin and recently had problems starting it after not using it for 3 months. I used starter fluid to get it going but it is now puting out grey smoke and black carbon looking particles in the exhaust water. It will only start with the throttle in full open position then quits after 45 seconds. Any thoughts? Also, does anyone know the proper fuel bleeding procedure on this engine.

First guess on any diesel is dirty fuel, water in the fuel or a clogged filter. That said starter fluid is tough on an engine and you have damaged a ring or a valve.

Thx - I''ll check fuel - hope its the first one and not second. Any way telling if it is the valves or rings for sure?

Yanmar 2QM15 Problem

I have a 3QM30. A friend has a 1Q and another a 2Q.

Check for water in fuel. The high pressure fuel pump is quite sensitive to water. It is quite expensive to have overhauled or replaced. A bad load of fuel can do this. Change your filters.

Secondly, I have primed these by barely loosening the hex at the top of each injector adjacent the fuel line while the engine idles. Fuel will come out along with air. Do one at a time. Collect loose fuel with a rag.

Third, if you haven''t already done this, check for water in the crankcase by viewing the oil on the dip stick. If it is milky, you have more serious problems such as a blown head gasket or cracked block.

Additionally, check your air filter to be sure it is clear.

Also be sure the supply (low pressure pump) is providing fuel to the high pressure pump by opening a fitting or hose on its outlet and checking for flow.

A cold engine will emit carbon. The grey smoke is the ether (starting fluid) combustion products. Best to figure why you need starting fluid. Bad fuel, dirty or worn injectors or pump, or worn rings and valves are all culprits. I would approach it with attention in the respective order.

Best of Luck
