LEWMAR winches, mod 44; 1980-1983

I recently acquired two (2) of the above winches that had been sitting in a garage for probably 10 years. They need to be "serviced/rebuilt."

The center spindle won't turn. I suspect that it is siezed from 10 years of poor storage, et.al. As a consequence, I can't get the center shaft out of the upper center stem. I suspect that the white plastic inserts/keys are the problem. LEWMAR does in fact have these parts.

Does anyone have any ideas for me on how to remove the plastic keys, and then how to remove the center spindle without damaging any of the essential parts? Again, LEWMAR does have the plastic keys.

salescalls - by a mod 44 I assume you mean a pre-ocean, non self-tailing winch, probably two or three speed?
