I have a 34'' boat with a diesel cook stove. It definately needs work, but rebuilding it would be cheaper than putting in a whole new propane stove and system. I am wanting any input on anyone using a diesel stove for cooking. One concern I have is the possible heat output to the cabin. I am in the NW, but plan to sail in the tropics. Also, my stove is not vented out, as are the new ones I''ve seen. Is this a disaster waiting to happen?

My general sense is that you are talking about a name your poison type situation as Propane stoves are not vented to the exterior either and they do have a tendancy to blow up. As I have said before here, every sailboat that has exploded I have direct knowledge of (with two posible exceptions) have had diesel engines and propane stoves. I have spent days searching for propane leakes and frankly would never have a boat with a propane stove. I think they are too dangerous.

We have an alcohol stove and oven and love it. It provides enough heat to bake a cake and cook a great meal. Something you may want to check into. It is very safe and economical.

I just installed a new Origo 3000 Alcohol Stove with 2 burners in our Morgan 33. Price wise it is economical, and easy to use. It is NOT a pressurized alcohol stove. It uses special containers that you put the alcohol into that are spill proof (you can turn them upside down and they won''t leak).

This stove can also be bought as a Model 6000, which has an oven.

Our boat had a pressurized alcohol stove that was old, and I didn''t like it or trust it. We had an Origo on another boat that we like alot.

This stove puts out alot of heat, cooks quickly, and meets all of our needs. We liveaboard. As with any device that burns with a flame...you need to be cautious and as far as ventilation, we just open the companionway hatch an inch or so when the air is on, otherwise its open anyway.

The make a combination unit with electric burners also for when on shore power.

West marine is a good source for these items.
