Bow thruster

I'm thinking of adding a bow thruster to my old 38 Irwin to help deal with the crosswinds while docking, Any ideas about how much I'm going to screw up the Hydrodynamics with a 5" tunnel through my bow? Or should I just keep on charging the slip to keep steerage, then slamming it in reverse and crossing my fingers? Thanks, Art.

have one on our boat

I believe Lewmar has a drop down model that functions without a tube.
my boat has a drop down thruster that disappears in the hull when not in use. i wouldn't leave home without it.
fair winds,

Bow Thruster

Artwerke,

I have sailed a sistership to my boat that has a Vetus thruster in a tube. The difference in performance was not at all apparent in its steering, or speed.

I had an opportunity to use the thruster - helping to re-anchor in a narrow creek off the Chesapeake. Its effect is pretty impressive. I think your dock charging days would be over. Bring a fat checkbook though! I wish I had one on my boat.
