''''84 Evinrude 9.9 spark question

Checking out this motor the other day, I found I had spark from only one coil. Ohmed both coils & found identical readings. Got the engine started & it seemed to run fine. Puzzled by this, I rechecked and still had spark at only one coil.
My question is this: Is it possible the motor is designed this way, starting and slow running on one cylinder, then bringing the second cylinder online for high speed? By the sound of the engine as speed increases, it seems like this could be what happens.
Anyone know? BTW, I have no manual.
Thanks, Brian
