is it seaman-like not to match canvas to the boat hull

Is the stripe on the hull in the gelcoat or a tape. If it is tape just remove the old tape. I think they have started selling the tape here on SailNet. If it is in the gelcoat you could tape right over it with the same width tape. The tapes they use are very high quality and last a long time. I don''t think I would like brown either. For the tape here on SailNet check out the Store section.
Also, if you really want the boat to look sharpe, do what I did. Get matching state registration numbers. There are many different styles of letters and you can add shading of a different color. Looks great. My trim and canvas it Navy Blue. I got blue numbers/letters with gray shading. I used a company over the internet in Michigan. I had them in about 3 days with a cost of about $30. Again, I just noticed that SailNet started offering these and you can preview the style, colors and shading right on your computer. Let me know if you have any trouble finding it.

I looked at the SailNet section for stripes, and all they show is fancy multistipes. I''m sure you could find simple striping tape for your boat that would be appropiate at many marine stores.
