lowrance elite five gold question

I recently bought the elite five gold without a transducer. I still get depth readings and am not sure where the reading is coming from. Is it coming from gps satellite? Is it reading the depth from the surface or from the unit? Theres not much on the manual in that regard. Any help appreciated

Re: lowrance elite five gold question

I'd guess it's in simulator mode. Some depth sounders automatically go into simulator mode if they detect no transducer connected. Somewhere in the settings should be a way to disable this??

Re: lowrance elite five gold question

pretty sure its not in simulator mode. I dont think so anyway. I get an accurate map and the depth readings are always a few feet deeper than my other depth gauge that does have a transducer. Thats what made me think it was reading depth from where the unit is mounted. Because it is about three or four feet higher than the transducer for my other depth sounder. Cant believe this is not addressed in the book. Maybe I should just call or email the company.

Re: lowrance elite five gold question

Talked to Lowrance and indeed/ofcourse I am in sim mode I guess. Bought and returned a transducer. Need extra wire to run it and would have to order bla, bla, bla,. For an extra depth reading its not worth it on this boat. The main thing I wanted it for was the chartplotter and I got that.

Re: lowrance elite five gold question

I've got the elite version which is just a chartplotter. It has a habit of rebooting itself occasionally, and it doesn't show some info from the same chart chip that shows on the Zeuss, but overall it's not a bad unit. Perhaps my main gripe is I can't figure out how to get it to display the current time!

I dont like how one (as far as I know anyway) cant just type in a coordinate and make a waypoint. I have the toughest time setting marks with this unit.

Re: lowrance elite five gold question

You set the current time with the overlay information - very easy to do.

For setting waypoints, move the cursor to the location where you wish to set the way point, then press enter and save the information.
