Re: Santana 27 Keel Bolt Replacement Question
I now have a question on two possible procedures to change the bolts on the keel. One of two Seattle boatyards has suggested that the keel is not removed and they change one bolt at a time. They naturally work on an hourly rate and it is estimated to cost about $2,000ish dollars depending upon the actual time. Included in this haul out, return, fairing the keel, and a coat of bottom paint.
The other boatyard is suggesting that the keel be removed completely and reinstalled with new adhesive and bolts. This full removal while it might technically the better way is certainly more involved and the estimate easily reflects it ie $3,300 or about $1,000 more.
I have limited time sailing this boat but the previous owner indicated that it did not leak through or around the keel. My reason for replacement is just the age of the keel bolts at over 40 years.
Thoughts or suggestions?
