Bed linens for odd-shaped berths onboard

What do experienced owners do regarding linens on board? It seems that none of the berths that I've seen are standard sizes for fitted sheets & covers that can be bought in stores. Do most people just get standard sized flat sheets and make do?

Using flat sheets and making do works, but some berth dimensions do allow the use of fitted sheets, they just don't fit perfectly so you tuck the excess away.

We use standard bedding linens and a quilt top most of the year in our aft double, which is a decent size.

For single berths (kids and guests) we used flat sheets doubled over and tucked under, making almost a sleeping bag style where the single sheet serves under and over.

Of course, for little ones sleeping bags work well as long as they are not too slippery on the outside (makes for little bumps in the night)

bed linen

While doing a 4 year tour of duty on inland work boats that used odd size matresses, the galley hand (crumb boss) used flat sheets of the next size commercially available (probabley full) and tied knots in the corners to make a tailor fit fitted sheet worked good and all the sheets were the same. I worked good for the crew and held well, a strategicly placed safety pin would be helpful if it crawls on you.

{whipping out my handy guide to Sailing Knots} Can't seem to find the classic "bedsheet knot" in my book but I like the idea! I made the mistake of googling for custom bed linen and found some companies that will make wonderful stuff for the beds, but I'd have to give them my boat in order to pay for them so I've canned that approach. :)

We (my wife that is) buys king size sheets and modifies them to make custom sheets.
