Hey everyone,
After the first season with my 25' Tanzer I made a list of "to do's" to make it more friendly on the water. One of the issues I ran into was having to carry a 30lbs bucket of anchor rode from the cockpit to the bow, then having to walk back and get the anchor and carry it forward as well. This is annoying (especially when single handing) but also dangerous in rough weather. Hanging an anchor on the pulpit or anchor roller is an EASY fix. The problem is the "bucket of chain" relay, I have no anchor locker obviously.
My idea was to install a "spurling pipe" (sometimes mixed up with Hawse Pipe it seems?) on the forepeak. Here's the "general" idea, hopefully it makes sense:
-Cut a hole with a hole-saw in the forepeak and attach a cover like this VICTORY #HM007400, HINGED DECK PIPE S/S. The Chandlery Online
-From under the deck attach a PVC pipe to the cover somehow and run it straight down at the very head of my V-birth into a bucket with a drain to the bilge
The problems I'm having trouble sorting out are:
1)Are those deck pipe covers just "flat flanged" and screw down to the top of the deck or do they normally have a "sleeve" off the bottom an inch long that would go through the hole in the deck to make mating a pipe to it easier?
2)How would you attach a PVC pipe to that cover\lid or how would you attach it to the underside of the deck? Epoxy? 4200? 5200?
3)I'm guessing it would be best to OVERCUT the hole in the deck then fill the edge with an epoxy (assuming there is a wood core I cut through) to seal any coring materials from the elements?
4)Has anyone seen a "ready to go" system that would save me trying to engineer one like this on my own? Honestly the biggest issue I'm having to picture it how the "cover" attaches to or through the deck and how to mate a pipe (PVC or ABS) to it to create a good seal.
Thanks!
