Faulty fuel injector pump or?

Ok here it goes.
First thing that happened before engine shut off was the rpm started to dance all over the scale. First thing I checked was the fuel pump and I had no suction when I pumped it, so I replaced it with a new pump and got plenty of suction, but still no action. I also loosend up the return line from the fuel injector pump(advice from everglades diesel that rebuilt the pump 4 month ago) but still nothing.
And yes i bleed the system 3 times but no. also when I bleed from the injector pump to the injectors I only get a drip (i'm doing it one line at the time)
When I pump fuel from the fuel pump to the injector pump plenty of pressure comes from the pump, but something is not adding up because every time I open up the filter canister, its half full ?? Is that normal or? May I have a leaking line somewhere? I haven't seen a leak but then again i can barely get my big head in all the way to see whats really going on in there.

The fuel filter canister should be full. I would suspect a slight leak on the suction side of the fuel system between the pump and the pickup tube in the tank that is introducing air into the system. If you recently did work on the fuel system just prior to the problem, I'd start there. Problems with plugged an/or leaking fuel filters are far more common than injector pump failures.

I agree with Ray 100% that your 1/2 full filter indicates a suction side leak. Solve that and you might find that it will then be possible to bleed properly and the other symptoms will be cured as well. I recently went through this when my suction line from tank to filter rotted to the point where it allowed a small amount of air through it's side. Keep being methodical as you have been and you'll get there!
