Since your new laptop doesn't have a serial port, you'll need a USB-serial adapter and have to get a GPS unit, like the Garmin GPSMAP 60C or something similar, that does have a standard NMEA 0183 output. Some of the Garmins have both USB and RS-422 NMEA 0183 outputs.

Personally, I'd look for a Garmin GPSMAP 76 if you don't need a color screen. Since it is an older unit, that has been replaced by the GPSMAP 76Cx, it should be relatively cheap to buy, if someone has one in stock. The reason I like the Garmin 76 series is that they're relatively waterproof and they float. Both are good features on a GPS that is going to be on a boat.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Overspendin is on a distinguished road
That's exactly what I did, I went to West Marine and picked up a GPSMAP 76,
the setup appears to be working just as it should!

Glad to help. Don't forget to download the updated system software for the GPSMAP 76 from Garmin's website.
