Eliminate Compression Post? Calculation of Force

For you structural engineers out there.

Anybody out there have a sense of how hard it would be to remove a mizzen compression post and replace the support function with an arch/box structure and side tie ins? I want the open space.

It is a 56 foot steel ketch and I assume that there is some downward force design load on the mizzen mast that, if met by the arch/box and distributed into the topsides could allow the removal of the post.

How is mast downward force calculated?

Keith

You really need to consult with a marine architect for this type of modification. I doubt your insurance company will approve of the modification otherwise, and it would adversely affect your coverage, should any damage occur to the mizzen or aft deck.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I believe this is a very bad idea..

On my own boat, I have modified it and it is now a RUM reserve with a capacity of 10 liters of rum..
