Westerbeke 58 Original to 1983 Boat -- Questions

Hello ---

I'm in the process of buying a Pearson 424 with a W58 Westerbeke engine that is original to the boat.

Is there a place to download a manual for this engine on the internet? The Westerbeke site has old sales literature but doesn't seem to have a manual?

Is there a Sailnet list for the Westerbeke like there is for the Atomic 4?

Does anyone have suggestions for a good marine diesel surveyor close to Noank/Mystic Connecticut?

Thanks,

Pat

The Westerbeke W58 is apparently the same engine as the Perkins 4-154. The manuals and parts books can be found here Endeavour Manuals
Scroll down to the bottom of the page.

I have this engine on Bristol (it is a bit small for 36k displacement) and it has worked very well. Some parts are ridiculously expensive - I had to replace the double pulley for the freshwater pump and it was more than $500.

The block is a Mazda tractor engine that is widely used in Asia and Europe but I could not find a dealer in North America for these tractors.

I know a really good mechanic in Noank who could survey your engine. His name is John (forget his last name and it is not the John who runs the yard) and he works at Spicer's marina. Knows his stuff and very friendly - tell him Bruce from Ainia says hello.
