So... boat loaded up Thursday, begged off work early Friday to catch the 1700 slack at Porlier pass.. Unexpected sunshine and a good looking breeze as we neared the Point Grey Bellbouy.. mainsail up, motoring the last 100 yds past the shoals, and suddenly BANG.. and the engine over revs... rats. No reverse either.. Oh well, easy 4 mile sail home again, anchored outside, tied dinghy into a hip tow setup and pushed ourselves back to the marina.
Our granddaughter wanted to sleep on the boat anyhow so we had a fun afternoon at Granville Island and Vanier Park.
Today I pulled the engine out, separated the tranny and found our damper plate completely and cleanly in two pieces, with many loose bits floating around the bell housing. Looks like the tranny is OK and no spline damage anywhere.
The damper plate (below) has no markings whatsoever, it's a 10 tooth spline on the input shaft and the hole mounting pattern shown. 6" outside diameter, 8 holes on 5.5" circle. About 1" thick across the plates.
Anybody recognize it?
VW conversion with Hurth HBW150..
The loose bits at the side are a couple of the 'mostly' whole spacers that seemed to originally separate the two plates and take up the torque.. presumably attached/bonded to the plates in some fashion that is not totally obvious.
